Приступая к составлению своего пособия, я первоначально имел в виду курсантов среднего Комсостава Морского Транспорта НКПС, которым необходимо уметь пользоваться английской морской коммерческой терминологией, вести элементарные разговоры на английском морском языке, а попутно также и иметь некоторое представление о ведении коммерческой корреспонденции. В дальнейшем же, приняв во внимание, что мой труд может до известной степени явиться руководством не только для означенных курсантов, но и для других лиц, изучающих английский морской язык, я включил в это пособие несколько статей специального морского коммерческого и технического характера.

Считаясь с очень незначительными познаниями большинства курсантов в области английской этимологии и синтаксиса, я старался подобрать по возможности несложные обороты английской речи и при каждой статье дал попутный перевод значительной части слов и выражений.

В общей сложности пособие содержит около 1500 слов и морских терминов.

В основу данного пособия лег преимущественно лично мною собранный материал, и лишь в некоторых случаях я пользовался лексическим материалом из учебника А. Ковригина и из „Спутника торгового моряка" Н. Ямпольского, а при составлении статей специального характера прибегал к официальным источникам БГКС.

Captain. Before going on shore I must change some money, as I have only English money. Agent, Have you any Russian money? C. How much do you want to change? С I have three sovereigns and a five pound Banknote, but, excuse me, what is to-day s rate of exchange? A. It is nine roubles and forty six copecks to a Pound Sterling. C. Here is also some small money, which I shall change too. A. How much is it? С Five shillings and six pence. — Are you familiar with English money? A. Not very, I know that twelve pence make a shilling and twenty shillings are a Pound Sterling. C. Let me show you: This is a farthing, which is about equal to one Russian copeck. Your two copeck coin

corresponds to the English halfpenny piece. This is a penny (it is exactly 3. 91/100 copecks). The farthing, the halfpenny and the penny are copper coins, and here is some English silver money: a sixpence—which is about the size of your waist coat button, a shilling is equal to 46 copecks. This one with a sort of cross on one side is a two shilling piece. You must not mistake it for this coin, which is half a crown or two shillings and sixpence. — What is a guinea? It is one pound and one shilling; two guineas are two pounds and two shillings, three guineas are three pounds and three shillings and so on. There are no guineas in circulation, the prices in the shops in England, however, are often marked in guineas. I will write you on a slip of paper the amount I should like to change, here it is: £ 8. 5 sh. 6l. (eight pounds five shillings and six pence). A. Thank you, everything is clear to me now.

In Europe 1 have visited besides all the ports of England, Scotland and Ireland, the following countries: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Rumania, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Latvia, Esthonia, Turkey and now 1 am in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics) for the first time. Last autumn I was in the Far East—in Japan, China and India and next spring I shall go to the U. S. A. (United States of America) and this summer 1 also hope to visit the South American ports of Brazil and Argentine.

Being Captain of a merchant steamer, I have crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times and the Pacific twice. In the Mediterranean I have been three times, but only once in the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The Black Sea ports are unknown to me. This is my first voyage to the Baltic and to the Gulf of Finland, the ports in the North Sea however are very well known to me. All these waters with their coasts and islands are shown on the sea charts, which also contain the soundings of the sea; same are marked in fathoms or feet.

I hear there is also a big theater in this place, but I am afraid I shall have no time to visit it to-night, as I must be back on board before sunset. A. I would advise you to put on warm clothes and to take your waterproof (overcoat), as a strong cold wind is blowing to-day and it is very possible, that we shall have rain again. By the way, you English people do not like rubber-shoes, but same are very suitable for our country and almost everybody wears them here. M- That is a good idea, it will be one of my purchases in this port, and I shall be thankful to you, if you show me the place, where I can get a pair of rubber shoes. Besides, I must buy some smoking tobacco, some stationary, and some medicine. A. The tobacco and the stationary shops are

Here we are, the waiter is bringing everything I have ordered: this is a herring, here is fresh Astrakhan caviar, sardines, pickled mushrooms, some sausage and cheese. B. Everything tastes very nice and what do you call that greasy black stuff on that plate? A. This is pressed caviar, try it, no doubt you will find it very delicious. B. I like your cabbage soup very much, it has a very agreeable flavour indeed. Why, I think, I shall repeat it. Pass me the bread and butter, please. What would you like to drink? Shall we take some white wine or some claret, or do you prefer beer? A. Thank you, as a rule I take mineral water with my meals, but I shall keep you company with a bottle of wine for a change. B. С Before reaching Reval we called at Stockholm, where we met an Italian steamer. 12. Port formalities.

If a steamer or a sailing vessel sails abroad and enters a port in a foreign country, same has to pay various taxes (dues), fees and charges in connection with the entrance into the port, the loading and discharging of the said steamer and other charges for the time of her lying in the port. In each port and every country these charges vary depending on certain local circumstances, but the main charges and taxes are more or less the same everywhere and come under the following three headings, viz:

i) Stevedoring etc. 2) Port charges and sundries and 3) Other disbursements.

Before speaking about the details of the above mentioned three kinds of charges, it is necessary to know, that the master of each commercial vessel entering a port for discharging and loading cargo has to present the following data, viz:

A.  I would like to inspect your steamer, so as to be familiar with the general arrangement and lay out of the vessel and its accomodation for passengers and crew. Please show me round.

B.  We are now on the starboard side of the main deck, but let us go to the portside, as it is too windy here. We are unable to see the holds at present, same are filled with cargo, the unloading has just begun, however you will be able to see the lower holds later, when we go down. We have five holds and six passenger cabins in all. Here you see the steerage accomodation and next to it the pantry. This door leads to a corridor. Opposite the pantry is the storeroom and here is the pumpwell and the cableroom. This is the forepart of the ship and at the stern (aft) are the passenger cabins, the galley or cock's room, the saloon and the captain—, the mate— and the engineers cabins, which are running along the passage. Through

In accordance with the customs of the port the loading standard is 20 standards per hatch per working day, and as according to the Charter-Party you have to take 600 standards, we presume, that the loading will not be finished before seven or eight days.

A. Yes, the demurrage is foreseen at a rate of £ 25.—. —. per day and the despatch at £ 20.— per day or pro rata. A. We have here the best Donetz coal, brand „F" at 21 sh/per ton (pton) including trimming. In order not to interfere with the loading of the timber, the bunkering can begin from a coal hulk as soon as the whole cargo is on board.

The steamer „takes in" cargo and will be „fit-fed out" before soon. She is now „under steam" and „is bound" for Hamburg. If a vessel sails abroad, we say „she is bound outward", and in case she returns home from a foreign port, one says „she is bound homeward". The pilot knows the channel (fairway), „he gets the ship safely into the port"; without a pilot, the ship can easily „run aground". 46

On entering a port with many steamers lying in, „the ship is waitingher turn at the berth". In connection with the loading (or discharging) in such case the expression is used „her turn begins to-morrow, (this afternoon, day after to-morrow)". Depending on the circumstances, in some cases after stowage „the holds are sealed". According to the agreement in the Charter-Party some cargo is loaded from or discharged into lighter; „the lighters are supplied by the stevedore". If you want to forward your goods by steamer, you must „secure tonnage" and „settle the rate of freight". In order to protect yourself from any loss of your goods or damage to same during the voyage, it is necessary to „effect an insuranc e". Every charterer prefers to ship his cargo in „a good classed steamer" or vessel. If the steamer does not comply with all requirements of a good classed vessel, one says „she is outclassed1'. The cargo, which is loaded on deck of a ship, is called „deck cargo" or „deck load".

When a steamer takes in coal for her own use, one says „she is bunkering".

With reference to the freight the following terms are often used, viz: „Freights are low now owing to the idle tonnage", or „T he rise of freight is due to the scarcity of tonnage" or „At present it is difficult to secure tonnage at any rate".

If you charter a vessel, „you agree upon the rate of freight" and the paying conditions of the freight. You also indicate the „number of working days" allowed for loading and unloading of your cargo, mentioning the allowance for „lay days". You must point out the time of the departure of the steamer and, if necessary, to make the Captain call at any port or ports, which you require for your purpose.

19. Shipping business: Forwarding goods and Shipping Documents.

Пароходное дело: отправка товара и погрузные документы.

A business man buys and sells goods. After the sale of goods he must deliver them to the purchaser. The delivery is carried on either by railway, or by steamer (vessel). In former case the goods are delivered to the railway station and loaded into the railway cars (waggons). No long correspondence and no special agreements are needed in connection with this way of delivery of the merchandise. The Duplicate of the Railway Bill is simply to be forwarded by mail to the person, who has purchased the goods. On arrival of the goods the consignee receives them without any difficulties at the place of destination.

It is a different matter with the delivery of goods by steamer- In this case the shipper is obliged to look for space in a steamer, which is bound for the port to which the goods are to be forwarded, or he has to charter a whole steamer in dependence of the quan-

tily of his cargo. The freighting or chartering of such a steamer is done through a ship broker, or a shipping agent, who signs an agreement with the shipowner in the name of the Charterer. Such an agreement is called the Charter-party. The Charter-party must include all terms concerning the rate of freight, the time of loading, the port or ports of destination of the steamer, the loading conditions, and so on. After signing such an agreement, the steamer is considered as being chartered or freighted, and the loading of the goods can begin. The stevedore looks after the stowage and the trimming in the holds, in order to fill the cargo space and to protect the goods from any damage during the voyage. Coal, grain and other loose cargo is loaded in bulk. As soon as the cargo, agreed upon in the Charter-party is loaded, the Captain or Master of the vessel hands over to the shipper a signed receipt, which confirms that the whole cargo is received on board the vessel. Such a receipt is called the Bill of Lading. Depending on the requirements of the shippers, the B/L is issued in three, four, or even more copies, and may be written out „to order", or in the name of any person or persons, as required.

The shippers must protect themselves from any loss or damage of resp. to their goods during the journey, which means, that they pay a certain premium to the Insurance Company covering the risk against a general or particular average, or against a shipwreck. The rate of premium depends on the total sum of the

Insurance, and the latter, in its turn, on the class of the vessel, the kind and value of the goods, on the duration of the voyage, on the season etc. The document, which covers such an Insurance, is called Marine Insurance Policy.

The Captain of the vessel, or his agent must perform the necessary formalities at the Custom House (clear the vessel) for the right of putting to sea.

20. Arrival of the vessel at the port

of destination. Прибытие судна в порт назначения.

On arrival of the vessel at a port in which, say, part of the cargo must be discharged, the captain presents to the Custom House a document called the Custom House Declaration, for the purpose of discharging the cargo destined for this port, and also for receiving a Custom House Bond for the „goods in transit", which are not to be discharged, but which are to be reshipped outward by the same steamer.

The unloading of the steamer cannot begin before the formalities with the above mentioned documents are concluded. Besides the captain has to present the following documents: the Certificate of registry (Bill of tonnage), the Ship's articles, the Muster roll or Crew list, the Bill of Health, the Bills of Lading, the Manifest, and in some cases the Log book. In case the cargo arrives at the port of destination, in a damaged condition, be it caused by fire, sea water, explosion, or any other reason, the captain has to make a Statement (protest) to that effect. Furthermore an expert is invited to inspect the damaged goods and to fix the extent of the average. Such an expert is

called the Average Stater and the document, in which he writes down his suggestions, is named the Average Statement. Dependent upon the kind of the damage to the goods resp. to the vessel, a General Average Statement, or a Particular Average Statement are issued. This Average Statement is presented to the Insurance Company or Companies, in which the vessel and the cargo were insured. The Insurance Company reimburses the shipowners, or the shippers, or both the losses inflicted upon them depending on the state of the average.

The owners of the vessels are in standing contact with the captain and with their agents abroad,

the shippers transmit information about the cargo to the consignees and receive shipping instructions from them, the charterers, who are interested in shipping a full load, communicate with their brokers and with the agents as regards tonnage, and so on.

The business, which was formerly conducted by mail, is nowadays mainly carried on by telegraph or by wireless, and the possession of a telegraphic code is therefore essential in every shipping office.

There are numerous codes in the shipping world at present, and almost every phase in the shipping line is clearly and in short transmitted with the aid of a code.

Hereafter are given but a few characteristic phrases, which would be used by means of a code with reference to cargo, appointment of an agent, arrival and departure of the vessel, parts of the hull, the engine, the boilers and damages to same, and a few others:

We should feel obliged, if you would henceforth supply us regularly with the list of sailings for above ports together with all particulars of freights for the goods, as per list attached likely to be imported by us.

As we shall probably have to ship sometimes by sailing-vessels, please keep us posted up with regard to such opportunities, as may offer and inform us of the difference in freight obtaining on the average between steamer and sailing-vessel, as also of the time required by each for the passages.

Is there any advantage to be gained by paying the freight on this side, instead of charging it forward?

Так как нам вероятно придется иногда отправлять грузы парусными судами, просим дать сведения о всех представляющихся к этому случаях и уведомить нас о существующей разнице, в среднем, между фрахтами при отправке на пароходе и на парусном судне, а также относительно срока, требующегося для доставки груза в том и другом случаях.

Получается ли какая-либо выгода при уплате фрахта здесь на месте, вместо зачета его к уплате по прибытии?

In reply to your favour of the 20th inst. we shall be very pleased to keep you posted up in the sailings both by steamer and sailing vessels for the ports mentioned.

By same post we are sending you the Cards of the various lines, that have steamers about to load; there are no sailing vessels in the port at the moment and they are not very frequent.

Rates are very low at present, and for the class of goods you mention, freight is quoted today at 35sh/— per ton weight, with 10 per cent primage for the ports in question.

When sailing-vessels are on the berth, they generally accept cargo at about iosh;—per ton less than steamers.

There is generally speaking a difference of 5sh/ — per ton, when freight is paid on this side.

We shall be glad to receive your orders and beg to enclose some forms for your use.

Этою же почтою посылаем Вам об'явления различных пароходных обществ, имеющих пароходы к нагрузке. Парусных судов в настоящее время в гавани не имеется и таковые бывают здесь лишь изредка.

Фрахты стоят сейчас очень низко и Для указанного Вами рода товаров котируемый сегодня фрахт— 35 шиллингов за тонну, с начислением ю процентов примажа для портов, о которых идет речь.

Когда парусные суда бывают в порту, они обыкновенно принимают груз на ю шиллингов де^ шевле за тоьну, чем пароходы.

Разница при уплате фрахта здесь составляет обыкновенно 5 шиллингов i>a тонну.

Нам приятно будет иметь 8/поручение.
